Part 3: Using the Five Elements to Fix What Feels Wrong in a Room

In understanding why some spaces energize us while others drain the life out, the answer is often found in feng shui, and specifically in the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements need to be present in any space in just the right balance. When skillfully used in any interior decor, the result is an alive sense of harmony that energizes us. When neglected, a space can feel exhausting to be in. The five elements theory is complex and ancient, but the basics are easy to understand and start applying.

Let’s see why these elements are such a foundational feng shui powerhouse.

Part 1: What Are the 5 Feng Shui Elements?

Going back many thousands of years (some say 3,000 years, some go as far as 5,000 years); the feng shui masters of ancient times were exploring the unseen dimensions of universal energy called Chi. Their goal was to map the influence of this universal energy on humans’ wellbeing. Delving into the mysteries of cosmic knowledge, they studied the connection between physical spaces and time cycles, between personal rhythms and the universal ones. The movement of good Chi in various land formations, the flow of water, and in the geometry of structures was meticulously mapped.

What they came to realize (and define as a non-negotiable principle) is that the presence of specific natural elements is absolutely required in order for humans to thrive in any indoor space. These vital elements were defined as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of these elements is expressed in colors, sounds, body organs, compass directions, planets, flavours, etc. This knowledge is complex because feng shui is part of a bigger Daoist body of wisdom containing disciplines such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi Qong, Tai Chi, all using the same vocabulary but in a different context.

We do not need to go very deep in order to understand how the elements create good feng shui in any space. Simply stated, the five elements are specific universal energies that are expressed as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water elements. They can be viewed as building blocks, or tools that help create spaces that feel harmonious, alive, and supportive of those who live there.

“We were getting on each others nerves. Now, walking into a room, it feels a lot more spacious. Visitors say the house looks bigger. We love the flow that has been created. The change made to the ‘heart’ of our home is amazing, it is much more serene and calm now. I look forward to going home after a long day at work.”
