There are several feng shui basics in celebrating the Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year. First, it is important to clean your home thoroughly, as well as use some space clearing to assure the feng shui energy in your home is clear.

In many Oriental cultures cleaning on the first few days of the New Year is considered bad luck, so it goes without saying that it is best to clean your home in advance and keep the energy peaceful and clean.

Second, much attention is being given to specific decorations that are used both as feng shui annual cures and as New Year celebration decor. For example, the word fish in Cantonese sounds the same as abundance, so there is always a fish dish on the new year celebration table. The uncut noodles symbolize long life, while the many sweet dishes are expressions of hope for sweetness in the new year. As a symbol of good luck, the mandarin oranges are always present, too.

The morning after New Year’s day many traditional red envelopes with a bit of money in them are given to children and friends. This symbolizes a helping hand from the older generation to the younger one, as well as wishes for prosperity and financial well-being. Small gifts are often exchanged between close friends and family members.

The Lunar New Year celebration lasts for 15 days with the Festival of Lanterns being the culmination of this beautiful holiday. Hundreds of candles are lit to welcome the fresh new light of another year. The Lunar New Year is a big celebration not only in China, but also in Tibet, Mongolia, Vietnam, Bhutan, Korea, and several other East Asian cultures.

Because it depends on the moon cycle — the Lunar New Year is on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice — it comes on a different day each year and is considered the beginning of Spring. Each year carries the energy of a specific zodiac sign (or archetype), a specific feng shui element, and a predominant energy of one of the two polarities (Yin & Yang). These factors, combined, determine the overall quality of each new year.
